Roadside Assistance for Seniors

A breakdown is a bigger problem when you'd rather not change a tire yourself or wait alone on the shoulder, which is why roadside coverage is worth a second look at this age.

What roadside coverage actually changes

Your driving record and your health are still what an insurer looks at first. Age by itself doesn't change your premium the way people assume.

What does change is how much a breakdown costs you if you're not covered. Roadside assistance added to your policy means a tow truck or a locksmith is a phone call, not a bill. Whether your policy includes it, or whether you're paying for a separate membership you don't need, is worth checking.

What sets your rate

Your driving record still matters most. A clean record keeps your premium where it is, and a recent accident or ticket moves it, at any age.

The car you drive matters too. Repair costs and safety features factor into what you pay, and some cars cost noticeably less to insure than others.

How much you drive matters as well. If you're retired and driving less than you used to, tell your insurer. Lower mileage can mean a lower premium, but only if they know about it.

Where drivers overpay

The most common overpayment is paying twice for the same help, once through a roadside membership and again through a policy add-on that covers the same thing. At renewal, check what your policy already includes before you pay for anything extra.

It's also worth asking whether a completed defensive driving course has actually been applied to your rate. Many drivers take the course and the discount never gets added because nobody sent in the certificate.
